When you discover that you have faulty garage door springs, you may think about calling in the professionals in order to make the necessary repairs to your door. However, although springs can be dangerous, with some careful advice, you can change garage door springs yourself. Below you will find instructions for changing extension springs of your garage door.

The tools you will need are some good safety goggles and hard and protecting gloves, a set of top quality screw drivers and some vice grips.

Step 1 - Make sure you are kitted out for the job by putting on your safety goggles and gloves. Garage door springs can be extremely dangerous due to the amount of tension in them and one foul move and someone could be seriously injured.

Step 2 - Make sure that you replace the springs from both sides of the garage port entry door; although one spring may still be good, it is a rule of thumb that if one spring is broken, then the other will be about to break too, so replacing them as a pair will save time and effort.

Step 3 - The next step when replacing garage door springs is to open the garage door until it is extended to the full amount possible. When you have your door at the top of the tracks, hold it in place using the vice grips.

Step 4 - The next stage is a dangerous and tricky stage and it involves very carefully removing the broken or faulty springs. Extension springs are looped and you need to carefully release the loop.

Step 5 - Next, you need to take the spring to your local supplier in order to make sure that the replacement spring that you will buy is the exact match to the old one. If they do not have the spring in stock, then ask them to order one.

Step 6 - Now you have purchased your new springs, it is time to bring them home and fit them. This is a very delicate part of the operation and you must be entirely sure that you carry out the procedure correctly, looping the springs into place.

Step 7 - The last stage is for you to un-clamp your vice grips and put in place. From here, you can then check that your door is working properly and that you have carried out the operation successfully. Make sure that the door now opens smoothly and makes no strange noises. If in any doubts, then it is always best to bring in a technician.
